05 Oct 10 - My Pet Dragon

Hey, blogspot readers, this one special playlist recommendation in which this reviewer highly recommends you listen! The ambient and floetry music by My Pet Dragon has released a new single today - Flow. And she says - WOW after listening carefully to the gentle rhythms of melodic music which will this sense of psychedelic groove happening between your ears ...it sounds so magical as the energy comfortably flows through you while dancing to the calming sound ...there aren't many words to describe how this song rocked SouthSide's earplugs. Plus as an added bonus, take a listen to their B-side cover of Pearl Jam's Release - it's awesome My Pet Dragon's take on this song by substituting the hard guitar rock sound for a flowing ...meditative mood music ...very calming with the orchestrative sounds and vocals. Ah ...what a rush, blogspot readers, perfect song to listen after a long hard workday.

29 Aug 10

Hey, blogspot readers, Summer 2010's definitely fading away fast. However before heading back to school and hitting the books, check out the following recommend CDs recently added to SouthSide's collection!

shall we?
The Grownup Noise
www.thegrownupnoise.com
www.myspace.com/thegrownupnoise

SouthSide described the live version of The Grownup Noise's performance as "damn good, feel happy, toe-tappin' music". The recorded version of this band is still the same way except you do hear the haunting tones of the cello (which was missed during their live show in Chicago). Yet, this reviewer had a fun, toe-tappin' time listening to the five-song EP filled with simplistic, story-telling lyrics. She highly recommends listening to track two - The Artist Type and track four - Outside to familiarize yourself with TGN's unique music and sound before listening to the other tracks. All are worthy of a listen but the two songs mentioned truly highlight Paul's (front man) vocal style.

Through the Mojowire
Midnight Spin
www.midnightspin.com
www.myspace.com/midnightspin

This two-track, promotional CD (found at Elbo Room) had SouthSide rockin' hard to the energy felt and heard. Both songs, Trigger Finger Itch and In The Air got her head banging to the twittering guitar riffs as well as the hardcore electric sound. Actually track two (In The Air) felt like a fist-pumping rock anthem - so this reviewer suggests cranking up the volume for this one. Fans can download the rest of the album off iTunes.

Rob Nicholas
Rob Nicholas
www.iamrobnicholas.com
www.myspace.com/robnicholasmusic

Recently seeing the acoustic side to this musician at the Elbo Room, SouthSide also enjoyed the amplified sife of Rob's five-track EP. The heartfelt lyrics and emotions heard during his acoustic set wasn't lost either on each song performed on the CD. Yet the full band backing him added more depth and sentiment into the songs. This reviewer was rocked by the organ sound in track one - Dare We Go (a soulful tone against the rock rhythm) and smooth Jazz with some funky Latin flavor in track four - In Hopes To Comprehend. She also recommends listening to track two - Searching, for its unique R&B/rock groove for this ballad.

In Between Reality and Insanity (2009)
Strong On The Surface (2010)

A Crush On Yesterday
www.myspace.com/acrushonyesterday

SouthSide had the extreme pleasure of reviewing this duo from Germany when they rocked a live performance at Elbo Room. She enjoyed both CDs of an alternative/acoustic mix with storytelling lyrics that felt so personal ...plus the lyrics are bogged down with complicated pieces of music. In the Between Reality and Insanity, this reviewer suggests listening to track four - Flashlights Follow Me, a poetic, imaged filled song with a calming tone heard inside the music ...it's almost like hearing a lullaby and track five - Two Days, a downtempo ballad compared to the lively energetic version reviewed at Elbo Room. Also she recommends the title track, Between Reality and Insanity (track six) which took a poetic/troubadour style in the lyrics behind the acoustic music ...very haunting. One particular noted, the song Writing Words In The Sand, appears on both CDs and SouthSide recommends giving this song a listen as well. Off Strong on the Surface, this reviewer suggests track two - Sinking Ships and Pale Seas, track three - Impatience and track four - Locked Up Inside.

We've Turned Into Monsters
Wally Dogger
www.wallydogger.com
www.myspace.com/wallydogger

With the title taken from a line in track ten, Alphabet Soup, SouthSide enjoyed the wit and humour heard within this band's lyrics. Fans will have something to snicker and giggle over especially track two, You Only Like Me When I'm Leaving (the live version of this song is funnier when coupled with Pauly's facial and body language) or track five, Jeans Day (the official "dress down" day song of the millennium. Or rally behind track six (Freedom Haters) while stalking your backyard for (Osamba) Bin Laden. There's one song in which SouthSide wishes was on the CD cleverly titled Bitchy. Yet it's not all humorous all of the time with Wally. This band does get serious like in track nine - Stop Giving A F*ck (whew lots of anger and frustration heard in the chorus). Also SouthSide recommends listening to track three - Tramp Stamp.

Seep
SoulFix
www.soulfix.com
www.myspace.com/soulfixrock

Alright, blogspot readers, bang your head to this CD! Feel the throbbing thundering grind of SoulFix's hardcore guitar sound ...shiver as Marlon's (front guy on guitar) voice rocks your ears with his falsetto that can suddenly turn into a battle cry especially in track one, Seep. SouthSide had weird chills while listening to track two, Happy ...it was more like a weird creep-kind of "happy" (a perfect theme song for Batman's Joker). Meanwhile in track three, Fed Up, blasted the stereo speakers with plenty of angst and frustration. This reviewer suggests also listening to track five, Weight, and track nine, Providence for a Lost Soul (both songs full of heartache and emotions within a downtempo style). Track six, Meaning of Life, became this reviewer's favorite song due to the band's going outside the "norm" (within Soul's hardcore sound) for something more calming and alternative.

19 Jul 10

Hey, blogspot readers, Summer's definitely heating up with more hot CDs melting SouthSide's stereo system. She highly suggests checking out the following reviewed selections:

Whiskey Sin
www.whiskeysin.com
www.myspace.com/whiskeysin

Finally - this rockin' local band has debut with its first CD! And SouthSide suggests cranking up the volume full blast to enjoy all of its thundering guitar rock sound your ears (and neighbors) can possibly handle. This 13-track album is full of intense, head banging music fueled by Brian (front man on vocals) pumping the lyrics with angst/frustration while Colin (guitarist), Brian Evans (bassist) and Tony (drums and backing vocals) deliver that hard-hitting rock vibe. This group of musicians truly had this reviewer banging her head to the explosive rhythms and riffs found in songs such as Borrowed Time, Lounge Puppet and Demons. SouthSide suggests listening to Tear Down Your Idols (track 5), My Mistake (track 6) and Lounge Puppet (track &) which are fine examples of the dynamic power of Brian's voice as he not only pours himself into these songs but his emotions as well. She also suggests listening to Undone[You Are] (track 10) and Demons (track 11) for Whiskey Sin's head banging sound and the haunting guitar solo twittering during the instrumental bridge heard in Demons. This reviewer highly suggests snagging a copy of Whiskey Sin's debut album when it's released on August 28 or check out their websites to see when and where this band's rockin' the stage live.

Praise The Fallen
www.myspace.com/praisethefallenrock

First, SouthSide would like to apologize to the band for thinking it was a hardcore Christian rock band. She has nothing against those who "rock out for the Lord" however that's what this reviewer thought they were all about due to the name. They're totally the direct opposite, blogspot readers. This trio rocked out SouthSide's speakers with their hardcore guitar rock/pop sound. Throughout this six-track demo (received during MOB Fest), Fallen's music had a little a bit of something for everyone to enjoy. Plus this reviewer also noted how some of Fallen's songs reflected some type of personal experience and/or feelings as well as influences. She suggests listening to Shame (track 4) and Change The World (track 6). Hopefully, there will be a chance to give Praise The Fallen a full review in the near future.

Model Citizen
The Webelos
www.thewebelos.com
www.myspace.com/webelos

Another CD received during MOB Fest, SouthSide liked the pop/alternative sound (with some country flare) of The Webelos' Model Citizen CD. The fun and witty lyrics in most of the six songs are perfect for summertime music listening. This reviewer suggests Can't Look At You (track 2) for its lively pop groove, Oh Miki (track 3) featuring Gabriel Stutz on the steel pedal which gave this song its country sound and Lucky Roll (track 4) for its retro rock sound (and the toy paino rhythms in this fun ballad). Perhaps one day, there will be an On The Town review on The Webelos for you, blogspot readers.

Michael Riser
www.michaelriser.com
www.myspace.com/michaelriser

Though this was merely a two-song CD sampler (off his upcoming album Volcano), SouthSide still enjoyed the rockin' energy found in this singer/songwriter's modern pop sound. Within songs titled Ride and Everyone, this reviewer liked the heartfelt emotion from Michael's voice. Yet it wasn't enough - she wanted to hear more from this artist and his band. She cannot wait until the full album is released for a longer CD review on Michael Riser. In the meantime, check out his music on his websites.

Home for Home
Matt Otis
www.mattotis.com
www.myspace.com/mattotis

In this CD liner there's a question in which only you can answer: if you were to die right now, would you feel content? Now, if you answered "no", then SouthSide highly suggests listening to Matt Otis' Home For Home CD and rethink your answer as well as existence. This six-track album has a profound message waiting for you yet you need to have an open mind to hear it especially while listening to the title track, Home For Home (track 1). This is the first album in which this reviewer found herself doing some inner soul searching as she listened to songs like Revolution of Peace and 1984. She enjoyed the storytelling style (mixed with some religious and political references/tone) within the lyrics. It reflected a deep personal experience that fans can relate. You could say Matt Otis' singing (or telling) everyone's story about life, love, etc while searching for inner peace and happiness. SouthSide also enjoyed the wide range of music genres represented throughout this album such as Americana/folk and modern pop/rock. She suggests listening to 1984 (track 3) for its quick synopsis of George Orwell's famous novel but told in reverse - Matt's pov is taken from someone trying to escape the totalitarian domain and Padlocked Door (track 4) for that angst/emotions felt within Matt's voice and guitar riffs. Or listen to Unknown Truths (track 5) where you can seriously reflect and question your faith of yourself. As the CD closes with Existence The Myth, you should have that answer to the question, blogspot readers. Check out Matt Otis and his sites for when and where this artist is bringing his thought-provoking music live to a venue near you.

Violet Winter
www.violetwinter.com
www.myspace.com/vltwntr

SouthSide discovered this CD laying around the Elbo Room Friday night in which Matt (that lovable door/bouncer/bartender) challenged this reviewer to listen. Never backing down from a challenge, she did listen to this ten-track CD by Violet Winter and says - WOW! It wasn't what she was expecting with its rockin' combination of electronica/pop with some lyrical hiphop/rap (in the first half of the CD) and hardcore/emo/vampiric sound (in the latter half). This CD had plenty of sex appeal (especially during track 2 - Abuse Me which appealed to SouthSide's alternative lifestyle where pain equals pleasure and there's pleasure from pain) as well as explicit language/sexually/drug/alcohol references inside Violet's lyrics. So it's definitely no a CD for young kids and/or those who might be easily offended by the harsh content. Yet, this reviewer says it's a worthy listen and to rock out your next adult party with the club atmosphere music poppin' off this album. It also features other artists such as Shorty K on track 3 - Relapse and Malik Yusef on track 8 - Find A Way in which SouthSide suggests listening to for its pain and deep sorrow of regret exhibited in Violet's vocals ...plus the haunting violin rhythms were a wonderful touch for that dramatic effect. She also suggests listening to track 4 - Break (hardcore electronica/rock sound matching the angst and aggression heard in the vocals), track 6 - Part Of Me (vampiric in nature which his deep voice lured this reviewer deeper into his deadly web ...had to listen twice since this song plays fast) and track 9 - Soulful (shivers down SouthSide's spine while loving the Gregorian chant-like vocals with its dark electronica/rock sound - indeed it was soulful). Ending with track 10 - Becoming (a cool head banging instrumental piece full of vocal ranting/aggression), SouthSide suggests snagging a copy of this CD (if you can find it). Hopefully she gets a chance to rock out with Violet Winter live for a future On The Town review.

06 Jul 10

Hey, blogspot readers, summer 2010 is really heating up ...not only in temperatures but also with new CDs being added to SouthSide's vast collection. She highly recommends giving the following a spin on your stereo.

Sky White Tiger
www.skywhitetiger.com
www.myspace.com/skywhitetiger.com

This six (6) track EP will astound and amaze the mind and senses while taking the listener on a fantastical journey via its music that combines symphonic rhythms and rock sound. And what a journey did SouthSide undertook listening to this album (thanks to good friend August Forte). Plenty of vivid imagery as well as orchestral music rules Sky's CD in which the lyrics pop to life in songs such as Fantasy Man or Twisted Trail. SouthSide enjoyed the piano rhythms during Say You're The First (track 3) that the downtempo pace highlighted the emotion heard from the vocals. Or find yourself wrapped in the mystery of Sky's Time as haunting lyrics (bordering delicately between fantasy and reality) and music blow you away. This was SouthSide's personal favorite. Though ending on a somber note with Miles To Go (track 6), this reviewer took it as a coded message that this journey's merely the beginning for both band and listener. Who knows where Sky White Tiger will take us next time. Fans in or near Chicago are encouraged to attend the Adler After Dark on July 15 at Adler Planetarium in which this band will perform 2 live shows (7p and 8:45p). There will be visuals (designed by A.J. Epstein, a Seattle-based light/video artist) accompanying this extraordinary music. Like Pink Floyd, this will give the audience one incredible sky show (no pun intended) they'll never forget. SouthSide hopes to attend one of the shows for an extra special "On The Town" review.

Easy, Maverick
The Nod
www.thenodmusic.com
www.myspace.com/thenodwi

This eleven (11) track album (minus the funny 0:34 opening titled Hello) was a fascinating collection of stories which took three years of work and thirty days to record, according to the band, The Nod. There are tall tales ...then are really REALLY TALL TALES - problem was deciding which were which for this reviewer. She had a fun time deciphering between the truth and fiction of these unbelievably stories while reviewing each song. However it was too time-consuming and exhausting because she was too busy laughing so hard from The Nod's eclectic humor. SouthSide enjoyed rockin' along with the band to its lively retro rock sound heard in most of their songs like Naked In Public (anyone's biggest fear unless you're a practicing nudist) in which she loved the lyrics - "...and I'll be damned/if we can't pull this off at 40..." or Vinyl Bluez (ah ...the lost art of owning a dinosaur i.e. a vinyl record in the new tech age). SouthSide highly suggests reading the lyrics for each song while listening to this CD ...plenty of head scratching laughs as Brett (front man and "mediocre" guitarist) brings these wild tales to life. Fans are also suggested getting to know (or not) the sexy, sloppy woman in She's A Wreck (track 6) or watch out, Houston we have a problem in Glitch Thang (track 8) or feel the Chicago winds blow in Flask (track 9). Also there's a wonderful art lesson in Pseudo Picasso (track 10) in which "...this isn't abstract/and it's not a work of art..." moral to that story. Catch The Nod on July 16 when they bring their wild live to the Elbo Room stage. SouthSide shall be there to review the performance.

Conception
Bambi Raptor
www.officialbambiraptor.com
www.myspace.com/bambiraptors

SouthSide highly recommends reading Bambi's full review on their recent MOB Fest performance live at Martyrs' on June 26. It can be found at http://southsideonthetown.blogspot.com/.

Meanwhile this six (6) track EP somewhat captures the essence, sound and feel of what Bambi's live shows are like despite rockin' along to the recorded tracks. Still you're able to picture the split personality of someone suffering from serious anger issues between Roger (front man) on vocals and Kenneth's (bass) screamo especially during Gunslinger (track 1) and Griffin (track 2). Yet fans will enjoy the punk/pop/alternative (and everything else in between) rockin' the stereo speakers. SouthSide does highly suggest cranking this one up on the volume - just to scare your neighbors a bit as Bambi rants and screams while listening to Alaska (heartache screamo), BSP (sexual screamo) and Echo (seemingly "calm" out of all of Bambi's songs ...but hidden in there is screamo). Plus take a moment to be mesmerized by the best CD cover art (on the Disc itself) with the dino spermie wormies at the millisecond of conception. Check out the Bambi Raptor websites for places and dates when they'll be rockin' the stage again including their August 28 I AM Fest appearance at the legendary House of Blues.

15 Jun 10

Hey, blogspot readers, summer's fast approaching and SouthSide's hard at work previewing new releases hitting the stereo waves ...in which she suggests you personally add to your collection.

JR
Jonny Rummble
www.myspace.com/jonnyrumble

This latest effort, billed as a limited edition, by Jonny Rumble had SouthSide enjoying the various rock genres differently represented in each of their ten tracks. This gave the songs its own uniqueness and style so no two songs will sound alike. Within this CD, fans will hear a bit of powerpop mixed with melodic R&B (track 1 - Cox Road) to a psychedelic groove (track - 4 Victim of the Times) and alternative-country/rock (track - 7 To Foolishness). SouthSide suggests listening to track 2 - Handgun Blues for its fun rock alternative sound in which this reviewer liked the directness in the lyrics "...try not to leave her house with a loaded gun..." - LOL. She couldn't help laughing at that line ...track - 3 BRZRKR for its "in your face" vocal style and the gradual rise in the guitars, percussion, and vocals sounding like Jonny Rumble is ready to explode your ears with rockin' music ...and track 4 - Victim of the Times for almost reminding her of The Zombies' She's Not There ...plus this reviewer loved how the vocal effects had a soothing tone. This CD also includes fan favorites Courtney's Basement (track 6) and Toe The Line (track 9) - listen to this song for its near acoustic-like sound as the guitar gently play allowing the emotions in the vocals to shine. Track 10 - Time may seem like a downer to end a fun rockin' CD yet in all things, there are no real "happy" endings. And that's the beauty of JR - there's a sense of reality ...no fantasy jargon just direct to the point on how the band feels about life, love, society etc throughout this album. SouthSide recommends snagging a copy of this Jonny Rumble limited edition vinyl set to release on June 15th. She also highly recommends rockin' Jonny Rumble live during their CD release show on June 25th at the Beat Kitchen.

The World Is A Beat: 2010 Dance Sampler
Concord Music Group
www.concordmusicgroup.com

SouthSide loves to party as much as she loves dancing to rockin' club/party music. She found this CD one day while shopping at Janet's Planet of Sound Record Store (located in Lincoln Square) and had a fun time dancing (and listening) to the ten sampler tracks of popular/club remixes. The World Is A Beat features well-known artists such as Sergio Mendes, Macy Gray, Vanessa Williams, and Paula Abdul & Randy Jackson. Recently, SouthSide tested this CD at a private party in which the lively energetic techno music was big hit ...kept the crowd dancing track after track. The biggest response occurred during track 4 - Dance Like There's No Tomorrow (by Abdul & Jackson), patrygoers liked the techno sound that pumped excitement into the room. and track 2 - Emorio in which contained some remixes of Sergio Mendes' Mas Que Nada and The Frog in this song. SouthSide really enjoyed track 9 - Waters of March. First recorded by Polish artist Basia, this updated version (by Sergio Mendes featuring Ledisi on vocals) was turned into a lively remix under a rhythmic bossa nova/samba sound. The title track (10) - The World Is A Beat by N'dami featured funky guitar and techno rhythms that will immediately get you dancing along to the song. Yes, it's true, blogspot readers ...if you look around, the world around us is a beat waiting to be discovered. And all you have to do is listen to the various styles/genres of music playing. This is SouthSide's theme for summer 2010 and beyond. If you're able to find this promotional CD - SNAG IT! It's great for all of your summertime parties.

Mathematica
Makeshift Prodigy
www.makeshiftprodigy.com
www.myspace.com/makeshiftprodigy

Compared to Makeshift Prodigy's earlier CD, Welcome To The World (2008), Mathematica is the next step into this popular local band's music evolution ...actually, blogspot readers, more like a revolution. This latest CD is more philosophical then the previous one yet SouthSide viewed it as a continuation of MSP's spiritual as well as inspirational journey to wherever the music is guiding them. For example, the title track (1) - Mathematica is part two to The Circle (track 4 on Welcome To The World) ...it almost has the same fire and passionate energy (and almost the same lyrics) as its predecessor yet having more electrionica/ambient rock sound. Or take both versions of Revolution (track 2 on the old CD and track 4 on Mathematica) - SouthSide loves the revamped version on the new album ...it comes with more explosive music and sound than its somewhat first incarnation (it sounds somber than the energy and passion as you hear it now). Still the message remains the same in both songs - all of us can start a revolution by starting it within us. During a live MSP performance, their fans go absolutely wild whenever this song is performed. They can feel the revolution happening along with the band ...it's an amazing sight to behold, blogspot readers. Other songs on this CD include track 3 - Alive (the live version of this song is one you should hear and see when fans come alive during the bursts of music and lighting effects running in sync ...and for the powerful lyrics "...and when you call my name / do you go insane / through all of this time / could you come alive / I AM ALIVE..." due to Anthony's (MSP front man on vocals and piano/guitar) vocals ....track 4 - Sentimentalist (Vyolet says "...this song has great heartfelt lyrics attached to music that makes me want to dance..." - it's her favorite song) ...track 8 - Clockwork (Brandon on the lyrical rap/hiphop portion of this album ...hope to here more from this talented artist). The live version lights up the stage with exuberant energy and fan-band momentum as both feed off each other. SouthSide highly recommends listening to Sirens (track 7) in which Anthony's vocals truly shine while the music gradually rises in a steady crescendo (a real heart pounding prelude) for what's to be a guitar-piano explosion of pop sound. Yet it still allows Anthony's voice to continue having its moment under the spotlight. During the live version, there's never a dry eye in the house ...sometimes you can catch fans hugging each other during this song. Track 9 may say This Is The End but not really for this band. They haven't reached that point yet in their music evolution and SouthSide eagerly (and patiently) awaits where the MSP revolutionary sound and music will take her next. SNAG a copy of Mathematica for your collection and experience this inspirational CD for yourself. OR see them live ...up close and personal. She highly recommends seeing Makeshift Prodigy live on Jun 25th at the Metro during MOB Fest when they'll be sharing the stage with Treaty of Paris and/or July 9th at Lincoln Hall with Riot Inside and A Friend Called Fire. Both shows are all-ages performances so expect to see SouthSide in attendance with the test audience (Vyolet and Sunday).

17 May 10

Hey, blogspot readers, the test audience, Vyolet and Sunday, are back again with two new CD suggestions for your listening pleasure. This review features Welcome To Ashley's Beyond The Pale and The Corey Booth Project's Colloidal Sliver & Vinegar.

Welcome To Ashley
www.welcometoashley.com
www.myspace.com/welcometoashley

Beyond The Pale

This latest CD by local rockers, Welcome To Ashley, impressed this tough audience that's jammed with an alternative/pop rock sound. They liked how this band didn't overwhelm them into "one box rock" genre within WTA's nine-track album. Sunday says "...it wasn't boring..." Both had fun listening to the wide variety of rock styles - for example Tracks 3, These Dreams of Mine, and 7, Light of Love, had this classic (early 50s) rock-n-roll sound but with a modern twist off the guitars. Track 2, Destination, received the most airplay due to its rockin' gritty guitar riffs.

WTA's songs, if shuffled in a certain order (except for Track 9 - End of the Line), will tell a story about being in a relationship. Yet the last song of this CD proves not all stories will have a "they lived happily ever after" scenario. Vyolet liked this one the most since it clearly expressed the pain and heartache of what was part of the singer's life was now gone. They enjoyed Track 5, Get Back to You, for its unbelievable tall tale of what it took to get back to this woman. He made the excuses sound so sincere despite leaving room for doubt about his incredibly complicated tale. Monday morning lovers (SouthSide and the test audience aren't one of them) will adore the chipper I Love Monday Mornings song (Track 6) which should be played with Thursday Afternoon (Track 8). Thursday Afternoon will remind a few fans of The Cure's Friday I'm In Love song.

SouthSide recommends joining her at the Darkroom on May 28 when Welcome To Ashley will be rockin' the stage live.

The Corey Booth Project
www.myspace.com/coreyjbooth
www.reverbnation.com/thecoreyboothproject

Colloidal Silver & Vinegar

Here's another CD which impressed the test audience (to SouthSide's surprise since they're mostly hardcore rock daughters). They liked Corey's homegrown sounds of Americana/alternative rock that sometimes incorporated a little country or California sound. According to them, the five-track EP popped with rockin' music thus making it very difficult in choosing which song was their favorite. Vyolet suggests listening to Track 1, Moonshine, and Track 3, When I'm Sober, for the way Corey's raspy voice had this tone of sincerity ...plus the alternative tempo kept her groovin' to the rhythm. She says "...they should be on the radio..." Meanwhile Sunday enjoyed Track 2, Let The Sun Go Down, for being a rock version of a lullaby ...it had comforting words within the lyrics. Track 5, All I Want Is You, was SouthSide's personal favorite for how the words honestly came from the heart. During this song, Corey's voice truly shines ...it's full of tenderness and sincerity especially when he say "...all I want is you..." Now what woman wouldn't turn down that emotional plea. Check out Corey's web sites for dates where he's performing next live on stage.

Until then, support the local scene,

Hey, blogspot readers, the Test Audience (daughters Vyolet and Sunday) was hard at work this week previewing new CDs joining SouthSide's collection. This review features music by Model Stranger, Peelander-Z, lemondrop and The Branded. Sadly you will not find any mention of Welcome To Ashley's CD in this review since the copy received was a sneak peek of their latest album for SouthSide to enjoy. After previewing it, the test audience highly recommends snagging a copy when it's officially released later in the summer.

Music of Christian Larsen
www.christianlarsenmusic.com
www.myspace.com/chrislarsenofficial

Push The River - sample song

This was simply a tiny sampler of how extraordinary this artist's music was after recently reviewing his live performance at the Elbo Room. You may notice there aren't any true lyrics within his instrumental pieces. That's because the instruments (i.e. piano/keyboard) creatively replace the need for human voice to convey Christian's thoughts and mood. Plus it would totally ruin the ambient vibe felt from the rockin' sound. Yet listen carefully and you'll find the notes/chords are actually speaking a fiery passionate tone especially in this song. The programmed beats and electric guitar riffs add a bit of sharpness to the ambient sound as it flips and twists into many directions all at once. Musically as well as spiritually Christian's tiny sampler does leave you wanting more of his music. You can find the review of his Elbo Room set at http://southsideonthetown.blogspot.com/ titled 02 May 10.

Peelander-Z
www.peelander-z.com
www.myspace.com/peelanderz

P-Pop High School

The test audience say you don't have to be an avid fan of J-Pop to enjoy Peelander-Z's CD. It's an eclectic sound of punk/garage music containing a witty mix of Japanese and English lyrics within the songs. They liked the funny titles such as So Many Mike (everyone's name is Mike), Learn Japanese (learning Peelander-Z style) and Duct Tape (they really love that silvery stuff). Vyolet has dedicated Track 4 - Handsome to every narcissistic member of any social networking site you may know. Also Track 2 - Let's Go! Karaoke Party! is a cool song to jumpstart any party towards a rockin' good time. SouthSide recommends listening to all 15 tracks of this CD. Vyolet also says "...Peelander-Z's unlike any other J-Pop band..." she has heard before adding "...they take their J-Pop-ness into a different dimension by pumping some fun into it..." It's recommended seeing the band live on stage for the wild comic/anime antics like SouthSide just did last month at Reggie's Rock Club. Read all about Peelander-Z's Chicago show at http://southsideonthetown.blogspot.com/ titled 28 Apr 10.

lemondrop
www.myspace.com/lemondroprock

Marilyn Dream

Though the first track - Sink Or Swim explodes with a rockin' bang of electric guitar riffs pulsing inside your ear, the test audience enjoyed the instrumental and simple lyrics ...since that's all the song needed. The title track - Marilyn Dream had a dirtier hard guitar rock sound coupled with raspy vocals which pumped some sexiness into the lyrics. They liked the keyboard rhythms balancing the edginess to the song's electric riffs. However, they did not like the rest of the CD beyond Track 4 - One Last Mile because it sounded more like a movie soundtrack for a Jason Statham action flick (with bar fights, car chases and/or the sexy hot chick sizing up the hero/villain) than a rock CD. Vyolet says "...it's good music but not really spectacular with an eye-popping rock sound..." SouthSide wonders if that's good enough to spare it from being a drink coaster at her next party. You decide, blogspot readers.

Model Stranger
www.modelstranger.com
www.myspace.com/modelstranger

Dreams & Bones

Upon changing their name from Reverie to Model Stanger, this popular local band also changed its rock sound to fit the new incarnation but spared their hit song (and Vyolet's favorite) Monster from the change. The first thing the test audience noticed was there's no similarity to the old band name. They loved how Stephen's voice projects more emotions in the songs (most about relationships/love gone wrong). The new music does retain the energetic momentum despite feeling and hearing its pain and heartache within the alternative sound. They enjoyed Model's guitar riffs that had them moving to the rockin' rhythm for example in Track 3 - Turn Of The Century. Tracks 5 - Carousel and 8 - What You Are Looking For are two fine examples of the emotional power heard from Stephen's voice. Both clearly demonstrates his vulnerable yet tender side in a downtempo pace. Vyolet says "...this CD's different from their last one [under the old band name] ...certainly broke away from their teenage angst mode..." In other words, she likes it. Brooklyn To Babylon: The Videogame EP

The test audience (like the Peelander-Z CD) had lots of fun with this one as well. They enjoyed the rockin' fusion of hiphop/old school/ rock with pops with lots of energy and sound in each song. They recommend listening to Track 2 - Rock Hood as a good start to introduce yourself to Shinobi's feel and vibe. It also has a cool rhythm to kick off any party to life. They loved the sharp electric guitar riffs rockin' the song alongside the hiphop groove. Vyolet says "...it reminds her of the early Gorillaz sound..." They also liked Track 3 - Stop! for it's abrupt stops throughout the song until taking the ears into a long instrumental of electric psychedelia of funky riffs and rhythms. It totally had SouthSide fooled into thinking she was listening a different track on the EP before it returned back to its original tempo. Track 5 - Brainstorm was dubbed as the ninja song by Sunday since it had a bit of J-Pop/Asian influence in the rock sound with a mix of old school DJ mixmaster scratching. Vyolet say "...awesome ...[Shinobi Ninja] makes you want to dance..."

Workout Music

The test audience enjoyed the quick one minute opening track uniquely titled - Wallet Keys Beer ...it definitely zips by fast as soon as you press play. Think of Workout's CD as your rockin' way to shed unwanted pounds (without really know you are) while listening to this local band's songs. Though the core sound has a 80s pop vibe, you'll also hear some pseudo disco and punk/garage as well as guitar rock in there too. The goal of this music is to make you sweat to the fun songs like Ain't My Jeans and Work It Out (dubbed as the workout song of the entire CD). This song is better heard live with their bubble machine running in sync and is one of SouthSide's favorite songs. You actually may not want to Don't Stop Now to Workout's music after feeling its groovin' vibe upon finishing the CD. The test audience loved the Ain't My Jeans remix featuring Ca$h Davis and Mr E on the hiphop/lyrical rap sound. They say "...this song deserves radio airplay..." Lover In Hiding

SouthSide would like to first thank August Forte for allowing the test audience to preview this CD. They enjoyed the subtle ambient opening which instantly leads straight into the title track - Lover In Hiding. The alternative sound incorporates a pleasing blend of rock and programmed beats which didn't overpower the vocals. Both music and voice naturally fit together as well as complimenting each other. After hearing the first two tracks of Lover In Hiding, skip to Track 5 for the instrumental version. The test audience loved its energetic contemporary sound of alternative/rock sound and without the lyrics, they loved the flowing vibe felt from the speakers. Lots of rhythms and melodies to keep you dancing to the beat. SouthSide plans to add this song to her wedding reception music list. Also they suggest listening to Track 4 - New Nation for the way Todd Michaelsen's voice shines while the incredible music takes a break for a moment. The simplicity of the guitar was a good move to accompany the vulnerability found in his voice. And check out Track 3 - Between Us for its India influence within the music that takes the sound into a new dimension. This world rhythm adds sultry flavor and substance to the groove which had SouthSide dancing to the pulse of the song. Expect to find this song used as her first dance choice for her wedding happening soon. She's also looking forward to seeing My Pet Dragon performing live on stage for an exclusive SouthSide On The Town review.

No Mercy

SouthSide recently interviewed as well as reviewed The Branded's debut on the local stage. This week, the test audience took a closer look at this band's No Mercy CD. Immediately they noticed that the intensive hardcore rock sound was nothing like former bands A Birdsong Valentine and From The Broken. This was a completely different rock band with its wham-BAM-please-may-I-have-another guitar riffs by Mike (on electric) and Shen (on bass). They liked the fact there's more of Brian's natural voice on the lyrics instead of his infamous gut-busting screamo despite missing it from the CD. Yes, he's actually singing, blogspot readers. They say "...could clearly hear the angst and frustration projected from his vocals as well as harmonizing nicely with Mike and Shen..." during certain songs. They recommend Track 6 - First Move to acquaint yourself to The Branded's rockin' guitar sound and Brian's non-screamo voice. SouthSide says this song's better heard live while accompanied with random video images on The Branded TVs. Plus they love Track 8 - Drug Pizza for its crazy and weird guitar riffs and wacky lyrics which sometimes make no sense. It's a stoner's version to "magic" brownies as you listen to this song. And carefully look for them receording the lyrics at the beginning too. The line "Did someone order a pizza" always gets huge laughs. Vyolet totally recommends listening to this song and is sworn to secrecy as what "I got a 5" is referencing at the close of this track.
